Psychology - How to find balance in "being Richard Armitage's fan" or "I don't need to marry him"
or "how not to become a psychofan"

Just imagine to be famous for one day. Not only You should work for Your bread, but You are living under the pressure that everybody is watching Your move. How is possible to be Yourself in this circumstances?
Well Richard is very private person. Should say this is very good for him.
The main problem in "being a fan" of somebody with opposite sex is that ...em... how can I say this... Some of fans have much more bigger expectations, that their Idol can give them.
For past years I was interesting with many things and I was and still I'm a fan of many people, like: Michael Praed, Enya, Roy Dupuis, Louis de Funès, Tommy Lee Jones etc, etc. And I can say: They don't even know that I'm exist. For Idols is important that they have fans. Without fans Idols don't exist.

I remember Lady Gaga from her very first interviews, that she was saying about not having much money, because all what she had got were clothes. But she is really hard working girl, and as I saw through these years she is very carrying about her fans, same Rihanna.
But these all people have THEIR OWN LIFES and not only. They have their own problems, feelings, memories, family, dreams, plans and in this isn't place for fans.
This is the most important what fan should remember. This is the most important in good balance in "being a fan".
Idol is human, person, same as we are, and has these same laws as we have.
I really like to watch fan vids from BAFTAs or photos made by fans or messages about autographs or meetings with Richard. We all can see that Richard only when he has time, he is working for his fans. And this takes time. His time. Not only he should preparing to new movies or resting. He does as much as he can for us.
As I quess everybody is waiting for his letters. This is even more what other stars are doing for fans.
I know that daily dreaming about Richard is very popular in Armitage fandom, but this can't lead to sorrow, that some things can't happen in our life, because we can't just marry Richard. I can't have even possibility to see him live, so this can't lower my fan feelings, that I like his work, movies, etc.
So for balance is important:
1. Your idol is human being with his own life, problems, feelings, memories, family, dreams, plans and time. As same as You are.
2. And he has right to choose person who can be with him in relationship. One more time - this is His Life. As nobody can't say with whom You can be in relationship.
3. Your idol can don't know that You are existing in person. It's his right.
4. For idol is important that he has fans.
5. Idol is really afraid of psychofans, so don't scare him more.
6. Fan has right to have fun from being a fan: that means meetings with other fans, oggling on photos, making arts, movies, buying things with idol, making things with idol, be happy when idol is in TV or is having an award or has possibility to be more famous or all 3 or more. You can write about Your fan feelings to Your idol, but maybe sending him a bra isn't such a good idea.;D Better pants, but for him.
7. Fan has right to be overexcited when idol is near. but look at point 5.
8. Fan should not be offended when bodyguard of his idol is mean. He is protecting Your idol.
9. Remember that thanks to You, Your idol can see why he is doing this what he is doing. You are making that he can see sense of his work.
10. You are a fan, because You like to be a fan, not because You have to.
For me being a fan should develop, and as I saw the most handsome male on the world I just can concentrate when I see other male bum and enjoy it.

This is a neat post and I'm glad you were the person to bring this up; I feel like every FanstRAvaganza needs one post in this general area, and yours is really concrete and helpful. As far as I go, I always tell myself it's okay to indulge in whatever fantasies I like as long as I don't do it in his presence, which I will never do, because I'm pretty sure I'll never have the opportunity to meet him -- but I also remind myself, when the fantasies get out of hand, that I know almost nothing about him. Everything I think about "him" is an extrapolation I make based on my own reactions. And because of that I tend to underplay stuff that I wouldn't like if I did know him. I don't like to ski or go to nightclubs, for instance.
It helps a lot that I don't want to get married, though :) Not even to Richard Armitage!

I would say that sending anyone pants/underwear (for them or your own) is always a no-no unless you are a couple. :-)

This is wonderful and keeps it real. You are so right when you say that I am a fan because I want to be and not because I have to be. It is my choice and the idol of worship owes me nothing but putting out good work for me to enjoy.
I think sometimes it is better when it is a fantasy. There, he can be whatever I want him to be. lol
This is perfect. Really.
The thing about sending someone your undies is: what are you going to wear if they're all in the mail? I'm pushed as it is to find a decent pair on laundry day!
I think the general rule I have adopted is: RA character fantasies more than OK, RA fantasies OK, as long as in my head they stay!
BTW Richard and I are considering an autumn wedding, what do you think? :)

Gals, gals please! of course that You can't marry Richard, because he promised to marry me this August and after that we are going on honeymoon in Fiji with these all attractions like riding on banana, parachute sailing, jet ski, snorkeling etc. I'll post all these manips...em.. I mean photos soon.

Great post, Jonia! Being a fan really is all about balance. If a fan starts thinking that their idol owes them something, they are getting into dangerous territory. I'm good with all manner of fantasy as long as it stays fantasy. By the way ladies, Richard and I are getting married over Spring Break...did you not get your invitiations? ;)

I do have a running fantasy that one day I will be close enough to US Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to ask him to autograph my college macroeconomics textbook (although that textbook is pretty heavy to be dragging around for an autograph!)
But it's probably safer for the free market trading world if I'm not allowed too close to Mr. Bernanke (lest I bore him to death with my worthless gushing over his Depression Era scholarship or the innovative tools he created to mitigate total catastrophe of the world financial markets in 2008). *sigh*
Ladies, I just want to say I have received NO INVITATIONS to any of these weddings!! But all will be forgiven if I get a link to the photos! ;)

Right on, girlfriend! I cringe when I watch red carpet video of screaming fans and photographers--for whomever is the object of their interest. It is so undignified. Now, a modest shout out is altogether different--as in the fellow who told his wife to say "look back at me, Richard" at the CALA premiere. Brilliant!
I would be too shy to ever meet him. And besides, I married my John Standring 22 years ago. Ha! So, I'm good.
