(Reuters) - Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica was flown to hospital on Sunday after a high speed crash while competing in a rally in Italy, his Renault team said in a statement.
A team spokeswoman said Kubica, Renault's leading driver and a race winner in Canada in 2008 with his former BMW-Sauber team, was conscious but gave no further details.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported, however, that the 26-year-old had suffered serious injuries with little more than a month to go before the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
"Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica suffered an accident at high speed this morning while competing in the Ronde di Andora Rally," the Renault statement said.
"The driver was airlifted to Pietra Ligure Hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical checks. His co-driver is fine.
"Lotus Renault GP will issue another statement as soon as more information is known about Robert's condition."
I heard that he has something bad with hand :( and he is waiting for operation. There is some news about internal haemorrhage. I hope that he will be ok.

Reports suggest that his hand was crushed and his leg broken in several places. The F1 racing driver who loves rallying was in surgery Sunday afternnon for multiple injuries.
The accident occurred at around 08.30 CET, Sunday.
Kubica (26) was driving a Skoda Fabia S2000 when his car hit a church wall on the driver’s side.
The Pole, who races for Renault in the F1 championships, was taken to hospital in the Italian province of Savona by helicopter after being cut from the car wreckage.
Co-driver Jakub Gerber is said to have emerged unscathed from the accident, however.
Details of Kubica's condition remain unclear though the f1.pl web site quotes Robert's father as saying his injuries "look ugly" though not life threatening.
A source told the German SID news agency that Kubica’s injuries are “severe”. Other reports say surgeons had to work on internal haemorrhaging and fractures, including a crushed hand.
Eye witnesses say that the high-speed accident occurred on wet road and on a bend where the surface was raised by a tree branch.
Robert Kubica was born in Krakow in 1984 and is Poland’s first ever F1 racing driver.
The F1 grand prix season starts on 13 March in Bahrain. (pg)
