Awww! Nobody has to spend money. I think it's nice to set a day aside to celebrate love. All types of love.

Hello Phylly. Hugs to You too. I have to say that Valentines day is popular in my country since 2000 or something. But is weird to see after Christmas red and pink hearts in shops.
BTW February 15th is "Singles Awareness (or Appreciation) Day" (S.A.D.) to celebrate life without commercialism of Feb 14th
In Canada, Valentine's Day is very commercialized too, but we celebrate it not just as a "couples" thing but a more generalized "love" thing -- friends, parents, children, pets -- you name it-- whatever you love, you can find some way to show your love. Not necessarily by spending any money either.
I am always sorry that people feel lonely because of some perceived expectation.
